So, what do MBAs do in sustainable energy?  Here are some examples from past listings (2014 - 2015).  While you cannot apply for these specific jobs, they show you types of jobs you could get and should be looking for.

icon wildcard.jpg Senior Financial Analyst, Nextera. Senior Financial Analysts are expected to work with limited supervision to identify and analyze the impact of relevant investment, environmental and/or business issues facing NextEra Energy on the company’s, financial structure, profitability, financial integrity and competitive position. Responsibilities includes engagement coordination with Development Leaders & SMEs, financial pro forma modeling and analysis, gathering and review of SME assumptions, preparation of management presentations and presenting to RiskCom/CFO reviews, and senior management vetting meetings, assisting in developing valuation standards and policies. The applicant should have undergraduate degree in finance, accounting or other technical field; and postgraduate MBA degree and/or CPA (and/or CFA) preferred. At least 3-4 years of relevant finance industry experience is required.

The ideal candidate will have 4+ years of experience developing businesses, building business cases, interacting with customers, doing product management, and/or developing strategic plans, and Top tier MBA (or equivalent education/experience) and undergraduate degree required. Knowledge of utility business model, current issues, Smart Grid trends, networking technology, and ability to learn technology quickly is preferred.

icon solar.jpg Analyst Asset Management, First Solar. The Analyst works with other associates and senior team members in the Asset Management group to support the development, construction and operation of First Solar’s utility-scale solar power projects. Analyst will be responsible for following task: 1) Create and analyze complex financial models for First Solar’s utility-scale solar projects in connection with PPA bids, EPC bids, asset sales, and acquisitions of outside projects 2) Participate on teams to proactively manage First Solar’s projects 3) Collaborate with Engineering, Marketing, and other corporate teams to drive initiatives to innovate and improve on First Solar’s product offerings and technology. The applicant should have B.S. in finance, engineering or science, however, other majors are also acceptable if followed by the required professional finance experience. MBA in business preferred. icon utility.jpg Biz Rotation Associate, NRG Energy. NRG is seeking highly motivated individuals who have recently completed an MBA or other graduate degree program to participate in a premiere development program for high potential candidates seeking a career in the Energy industry. The Rotation Associate will rotate through at least 3 assignments for an 18-month period in preparation of a future leadership role. Assignments during rotations will include Commercial Operations, Business Operations, Distributed Generation, and Environmental/Sustainability with optional rotations into other areas of the company. In these assignments, Associates will experience complex challenges and participate on and contribute to large scale and small scale project teams. The rotational assignments will be challenging and dynamic involving project management, process improvement, and multiple analytical processes. icon utility.jpg Senior Business Analyst (Energy Efficiency), PG&E. The responsibilities in the role will be to 1) develop, maintain and report key departmental metrics in areas of Budgeting, Planning and Forecasting through standard, custom and ad-hoc reports 2) Portfolio analysis and reporting, 2) assist in coordinating activities related to third-party contract management across all program teams 4) Develop and/or maintain data models for what-if analysis and for other business purposes such as scenario planning and pipeline management. 5) Develop annual budget and financial forecast and energy savings. The applicant should MBA and proficiency in using SAP R3, SAP BW along with work experience in business analytics and operations.

icon wind.jpg Market Operations Associate, Horizon Wind. The market operations associate will be responsible for 1)defining the scheduling strategy of each wind farm 2) executes and supervise the daily scheduling and economic curtailment of wind farms 3) data modelling and implementation of energy trading and risk management software 4) support the definition of 15-months forward hedging plan 5) Ensure all ISO requirements are implemented 6)support structuring of complex long-term agreements and anticipates adverse impacts of new regulations on the company’s wind portfolio. The applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, though MBA preferred and 3+ experience in investment management or the power industry. The applicant should also have proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software and superior analytical skills.

icon wildcard.jpg Procurement Specialist, Siemens. The Procurement specialist will be responsible to 1) provide a prime focal point to suppliers 2) assist in strategies to supply timely and cost competitive delivery of materials; expedite as needed and serve as liaison between Order Management, Order Execution, Planning, and Manufacturing. 3) Assist in updating project plans and purchasing systems; reviews and analyzes requisitions and supply plans for domestic and international purchases. 4) Prepare, submit and analyze requests for quotes.  5) Recommend and assist in the development of new supply sources.  6) Issue purchase orders in association with requisitions within limits of authority based on current customer demand, production schedules, component availability, work cell capacity, and product lead times. 7) Accurately maintain data in the purchasing (SAP) system.  8) Prepare and discuss supplier key performance indicators (KPIs) with management, commodity managers and suppliers. The applicant should have a Bachelor of Science or a technical discipline. Masters in Business Administration (MBA), CPM, CPIM or an equivalent combination of education and experience a plus. Six Sigma Black Belt, Green Belt or Lean certification / training a plus but not required.

Asset Manager, Invenergy. Asset manager will be responsible for 1) P&L for independently operating wind farms 2) portfolio finance 3) preparation of project finance forecasts and cash flow models 4) variance analysis of project contractual documents, including long term power purchase agreement, power price hedges, and large generator interconnection agreements 5) Manage stakeholder relationships with local, county, and state authorities, as well as landowners for leased properties. 6) Provide execution oversight for regulatory compliance with respective agencies. The applicant should have Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or a combination of Bachelors Degree in Engineering or another quantitative discipline and an MBA.
