icon biofuel.jpg Scientist (Chemical Analytics PhD), Amryis. The incumbent will be responsible for leading a team of associate scientists and building relationships to support the Amyris commercial enterprise. Specific activities include product stability assessment, product certification support, and competitive product analysis in such areas as polymers, cosmetics, flavors & fragrances, and new chemicals. A key component of these activities is translating stakeholder goals into analytical approaches to acquire the relevant supporting data. The incumbent will represent progress to internal and external customers on testing and data analysis, and will be responsible for preparation of technical reports. The incumbent will report to an Associate Director and will be responsible for the professional development of the team. The incumbent will have Ph.D degree in analytical chemistry or related discipline with 2+ years’ experience in an industrial laboratory environment. Record of excellent analytical capabilities preferably with such techniques as GC, HPLC, GPC, DSC, TGA, titration, spectroscopy for polymers and small molecules.

icon biofuel.jpg Sr. Research Associate, Novozymes. Sr. Research Associate will carry out research and development of enzymes for 2nd generation biofuels. Working together with scientists to understand enzyme substrate interactions and support new enzyme product development for biomass to ethanol or other sugar platforms. The candidate must have minimum 2 years of experience for MS. Experience with analytical equipment (GC-MS, FTIR, Raman, ion chromatography (IC) and Capillary Electrophoresis) and general enzyme assay techniques preferred. Experience with biomass substrate or carbohydrate polymer analysis is a plus. Experience with laboratory automation liquid handling (Biomek) is also desirable. Proficiency searching scientific literature.

The major responsibilities will include 1) with direction from senior leadership, develop and execute research plans towards developing genetic tools and engineering fungal/algal microorganisms 2) Genetic manipulation of fungal/algal strains in collaboration with other project members 3) Small scale cultivation of fungal/algal strains including media preparation and culture maintenance 4) Standard molecular biology – nucleic acid purification and manipulation, cloning, DNA sequencing, PCR, etc. 5) Generate detailed and complete notebook and communicate data to group in written and oral reports 6) Interact effectively within a multidisciplinary team. The position requires Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or a related field with a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in industry or an academic lab. Knowledge and experience of basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, SDS-page, gene cloning, DNA sequencing, RNA isolation, Western Blotting, etc) is also required.

icon wildcard.jpg JBEI-PHD-Chemistry, Sandia National Laboratories. The individual will work on a multi-disciplinary project involving analytical chemists, physical chemists, engineers and biologists to develop microfluidic chips integrated with optical hardware and software applicable to genomic analysis. Key responsibility will be development of sophisticated optical approaches for interrogation of single molecules (e.g., DNA) in microfluidic devices. The research will require development of optical and electronic hardware and software for high-sensitivity fluorescence detection; sample preparation for genomic analysis; and DNA amplification and detection in microfluidic chips. The research will also involve molecular biology and cell culture methods. Required: Ph.D. in physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, engineering (chemical, mechanical or bio) or a related discipline is required. Extensive experience in one or more of the following areas: fluorescence microscopy techniques (including confocal, TIRF etc.), optical spectroscopy, imaging data analysis, optical design, microfluidics and DNA detection.

Physical Biochemist PhD, NREL. The postdoctoral researcher hire will conduct fundamental research on bifurcating hydrogenases and transhydrogenases using biochemical and biophysical techniques. Duties will include microbial cell culture, enzyme expression and purification, biochemical assays (e.g., redox mediators and mass spectrometry), and the preparation and poising of samples for EPR and FTIR spectroscopy. The candidate will also be expected to prepare result summaries for monthly meetings, and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for publication. In addition, the postdoc will be required to assist in maintaining laboratory equipment, participate in biweekly group meetings, present semi-annual group presentations, and to attend yearly scientific conferences. The applicant must be a recent PhD graduate in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Physical Biochemistry, or related field. Experience with preparation (FPLC) and techniques for handling of oxygen sensitive enzymes and working under anaerobic conditions is also required.

Analytical Chemist, Sun Catalytix (now Lockheed Martin Advanced Energy Storage). The particular area of focus will be in the planning and conducting of analytical chemistry activities to support battery materials / supply chain development and overall battery performance and durability testing. In addition to developing reliable and easy-to-use analytical methods, the candidate will also have the opportunity to work as part of a team in the design and implementation of battery development plans. The candidate will also be responsible for maintaining the laboratory environment for the company’s chemistry R&D function, which will include bulk supply management, lab hygiene, and instrument management.. Ideal candidates will have a MS or PhD degree and/or at least 3-5 years of industrial research experience. A deep understanding of analytical techniques such as ICP-OS, mass spectrometry, NMR, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and pH titrations will be highly desired. Familiarity with electrochemistry will be extremely beneficial.
