Position Description 

Energy Storage and Electrochemistry related research is being conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This interest aligns with the Department of Energy goals. For example, energy storage technologies are a key consideration for new generations of electrified vehicles, the electrical grid, and portable electronics as well as for the full integration of renewable forms of energy generation. Thus, advancing the field of electrochemistry by increased understanding as well as pursuit of new storage systems is an important aspect of the Brookhaven National Lab agenda. This research activity will relate to the Department of Energy funded Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC), specifically the Center for Mesoscale Transport Properties managed by Director Esther Takeuchi. 

This post-doctoral position will be focused on the cutting edge of electrochemistry, electrochemical materials science and energy storage. This includes conducting experiments, interacting with theorists and other experimentalists doing synthesis and characterization, and reporting on the results. 

The position will report directly to Chief Scientist and EFRC Director Esther Takeuchi. Regular technical presentations to Esther Takeuchi, Amy Marschilok, and other collaborators will be required. 

Additionally, this person will interact with the staff scientists located at Brookhaven, in particular at the NSLS-II and CFN facilities. As the research will be interdisciplinary, interaction with these individuals is expected on a frequent basis. 

Position Requirements 
  • PhD in physical science or engineering discipline such as materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics or related discipline. 
  • Knowledge of material structure. 
  • Experience in investigation of structure-function relationships associated with oxidation-reduction processes (i.e. energy storage, catalysis). 
  • Experience with characterization methodologies such as x-ray diffraction, Raman, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy.
  • Ability to perform transmission electron microscopy imaging, diffraction and spectroscopy techniques. 
  • Ability to perform chemical characterization techniques such as infrared, ultraviolet, and visible spectroscopy; gas and liquid chromatography. 
  • Prior experience in design and building of systems for in-situ reactions. 
  • Experience in sample preparation for advanced characterization, specifically focused ion beam (FIB) methods. 
  • Prior productivity in research as demonstrated through publications.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  • Experience with characterization of core-shell materials.
  • Other Information:
  • Ability to travel between Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory frequently and on short notice required. Independent transportation preferred. 
  • The post-doctoral position is a 1 year appointment with the opportunity for reappointment for an additional year twice, for a possible total of 3 years.
